How it works
This tool fetches a live mid-market exchange rate the moment you load the page, so you get a real, current figure rather than a stale hardcoded number. If the live fetch fails — for example if you're on a slow connection — you can type in today's rate yourself and the calculator works exactly the same way.
Worked example: if the live rate shows 1 USD = ₦1,550 and you want to convert $200 to naira, you'd get 200 × ₦1,550 = ₦310,000. Converting the other way, ₦310,000 ÷ 1,550 gets you back to $200.
There's also a separate field for the parallel-market rate you may have seen quoted by a street trader or online — since this often differs noticeably from the official mid-market rate, entering it separately lets you compare both without losing the live figure.

Where does the live exchange rate come from?
From a free, publicly available exchange-rate API that updates regularly through the day. It reflects a mid-market rate, not the exact buy/sell rate any specific bank or BDC will offer you.
Why is the parallel-market rate different from the official rate?
Nigeria has historically had a gap between official/interbank rates and the street (parallel) market rate, driven by FX supply constraints. Use the parallel-rate field if you want to work out a real-world figure based on what you've actually seen quoted.
What happens if the live rate can't be fetched?
The calculator tells you the fetch failed and lets you type in a rate manually — nothing stops working, you just supply the number yourself.
Does this work for sending or receiving money abroad?
It gives you a planning estimate only. Money transfer services and banks apply their own rates and fees, which are usually less favourable than the mid-market rate shown here.
