How it works
Your prepaid meter converts naira into units (kWh)at your band's tariff rate: units = amount รท tariff. To work out how long those units will last, estimate your daily electricity use in kWh โ appliance load in kilowatts multiplied by hours used per day โ then divide your available units by that daily figure.
Worked example: on a Band B tariff of โฆ63/kWh, โฆ10,000 buys you 10,000 รท 63 โ 158.7 units. If your home typically runs about 1.5 kW of combined load (fridge, fans, TV, lighting) for around 6 hours a day, that's 1.5 ร 6 = 9 kWh/day โ so your 158.7 units would last roughly 158.7 รท 9 โ 17.6 days.
NERC groups electricity customers into Bands AโE based on hours of daily supply โ Band A gets 20+ hours a day at the highest tariff, while Band E gets as little as 4โ8 hours at the lowest tariff. Check a recent bill or your DisCo's app to confirm your own band and exact rate, since it can differ even within the same band across DisCos.

What is a 'unit' of electricity?
One unit equals one kilowatt-hour (kWh) โ the energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour. Your prepaid meter tracks consumption in these units.
Why do tariffs differ between bands?
NERC's banding system charges more for more reliable supply. Band A customers get 20+ hours of power daily at the highest rate; Band E customers get as little as 4-8 hours at the lowest rate.
How do I find my appliance load in kW?
Check the wattage printed on each appliance (or its rating plate) and add them up, then divide by 1,000 to convert watts to kilowatts. A fridge, a few fans, a TV and lighting commonly total around 1โ2 kW combined.
Why did my units run out faster than the estimate?
Real usage fluctuates with how many appliances run at once, fridge compressor cycles, and voltage fluctuations. Treat the duration estimate as a rough guide, not an exact countdown.
